01
Product & compatibility
Start here to confirm whether the rolling format suits your knives and expectations.
How does the BladeOrbit rolling sharpener work?
The magnetic angle support helps hold a compatible knife at a repeatable position while the diamond roller moves along the cutting edge. The guided format reduces angle guesswork, but technique, blade geometry and the knife's starting condition still affect the result.
Which knives does it work best with?
It is best suited to straight-edge, double-bevel kitchen knives that can sit flat and securely against the magnetic guide, including many chef's knives, santoku knives and carving knives.
Does it work with every knife?
No. Blade height, length, flexibility, curvature, handle clearance and the amount of flat magnetic contact all matter. If the knife cannot sit securely or the roller cannot reach the full edge, use another sharpening method.
Can I sharpen small paring knives?
Some paring knives may work, but very short or narrow blades can sit too low for the roller to contact the edge correctly. Check the setup before sharpening and stop if the blade is not held securely.
Can I sharpen a cleaver or Nakiri?
Some may fit, but unusually tall, wide or heavy blades can reduce stable contact with the guide. Never force a blade into position, and do not continue if it shifts under light rolling pressure.
What about boning, fillet or pocket knives?
Narrow, highly curved, flexible or short blades are less predictable in a fixed rolling setup. Pocket-knife ricassos, thick handles and curved tips can also prevent full edge contact. Use only when the knife sits flat and the full edge is safely reachable.
Can it sharpen serrated knives, ceramic knives or scissors?
No. Serrations, ceramic blades and scissors require different tools and techniques. The BladeOrbit rolling sharpener is intended for compatible straight-edge steel kitchen knives.
Can I use it on Japanese or single-bevel knives?
Many double-bevel Japanese-style knives may be compatible, but check the knife maker's recommended angle first. Traditional single-bevel and specialist blades should be sharpened according to their manufacturer's guidance.
02
Angles & results
Choose the angle deliberately and understand what routine edge maintenance can realistically do.
Should I use the 15-degree or 20-degree side?
Use 15 degrees for a finer edge on suitable thinner, precision-focused knives. Use 20 degrees for a more robust everyday edge on many Western-style or heavier-use kitchen knives.
Which angle should I choose if I am unsure?
Check the knife manufacturer's recommendation first. If that information is unavailable, 20 degrees is the more conservative starting point for many everyday kitchen knives.
Should I match my knife's existing edge angle?
Yes, whenever possible. Matching the existing bevel usually removes less steel and takes less time than changing the knife to a different angle.
Can I change a knife from 20 degrees to 15 degrees?
It is possible on a suitable knife, but changing the bevel removes more material and can make the first session considerably longer. A lower angle may also be less durable on some steels or heavier-use knives.
Is the effective edge angle always exactly 15 or 20 degrees?
The base provides fixed guide positions, but the effective angle at the cutting edge can vary slightly with blade height, curvature, thickness and placement. This is why correct positioning still matters.
Will it make every knife razor sharp?
No honest sharpener can promise the same result for every knife. Blade steel, edge damage, starting angle, geometry, abrasive condition and technique all affect the outcome. The goal is a clean, dependable kitchen edge.
Can it repair chips or a severely dull edge?
The rolling sharpener is better suited to routine maintenance than major edge repair. Deep chips, a heavily rounded bevel or a badly damaged edge may need a coarser abrasive or professional sharpening first.
Is a rolling sharpener as precise as a whetstone?
A rolling guide makes angle consistency easier to repeat. A skilled whetstone user still has more control over specialised geometry, thinning and very fine polishing. They are different tools for different levels of control.
03
How to use
A controlled setup, light pressure and consistent contact matter more than speed.
How long should the first sharpening take?
There is no reliable universal time. The first session can take longer when the guide angle differs from the knife's existing bevel, the steel is hard or the edge is very dull. Later maintenance is usually faster once the bevel matches the guide.
How many passes should I make?
Do not depend on a fixed pass count. Use light, even passes and check progress along the entire edge. Different knives can require very different amounts of work.
What is a burr, and why does it matter?
A burr is a very fine ridge of metal that forms on the opposite side when the abrasive reaches the edge apex. A consistent burr helps confirm that you have worked the full edge before switching sides and refining it.
How should I prepare the work surface?
Use a clean, dry and stable cutting board with enough space for the roller to travel without hitting nearby objects. Keep the area well lit and remove loose metal items from around the magnetic base.
How should the knife sit on the magnetic guide?
Place the flat side of the blade securely against the chosen angle face, with enough cutting edge above the guide for clean roller contact. The knife should not rock, sag or slide under light pressure.
How much pressure should I use?
Use light, controlled pressure. Excessive force can flex the blade, destabilise the setup, create uneven contact and increase abrasive wear. Consistency is more useful than force.
Do I sharpen both sides of the knife?
Yes, for a standard double-bevel knife. Work one side evenly, then reposition the knife and repeat on the other side. Specialist asymmetrical or single-bevel knives need their maker's method instead.
How do I sharpen the heel and curved tip evenly?
Slow down at the heel and tip. Keep the roller aligned with the edge and follow the curve without lifting, twisting or pressing abruptly. A full bolster, deep belly or large handle may prevent complete contact.
How can I check whether the roller is touching the correct part of the bevel?
Colour the bevel lightly with a permanent marker, make a few gentle passes and inspect where the ink has been removed. This simple check can reveal an angle mismatch before you remove significant steel.

Care & safety
Protect the sharpener, the knife and the surface beneath your work.
Should I use water or oil on the diamond disc?
Do not add water, oil or another lubricant unless the supplied product instructions specifically require it. Using an unapproved liquid can change performance or make cleaning more difficult.
How do I know when to stop sharpening?
Stop once the full edge has reached the apex, the burr has been removed and the knife cuts cleanly. More passes are not automatically better and only remove additional material.
Can I sharpen directly on granite, quartz or another polished worktop?
No. Diamond and metal particles can permanently mark polished stone and other delicate surfaces. Always sharpen on a stable cutting board or protective work mat, then clean the area thoroughly.
Does sharpening create metal dust?
Yes. Fine metal and abrasive residue can collect on the blade, roller and work surface. Wipe the blade carefully before food preparation and clean the surrounding area after every session.
How should I clean the abrasive disc?
Follow the supplied cleaning instructions and remove residue gently. Avoid aggressive chemicals, hard scraping tools or soaking unless the product instructions explicitly permit them.
The diamond disc feels smoother. Is it worn out?
Not necessarily. Diamond abrasives can feel smoother after an initial break-in period. Judge the disc by cutting speed and sharpening results rather than texture alone. Contact support if performance drops suddenly.
What should I do if the knife moves, slips or flexes?
Stop immediately. Reposition the knife and check the flat contact area, blade height and work surface. Do not continue if the guide cannot hold the blade securely under light rolling pressure.
What if the roller, disc or magnetic pad becomes loose?
Stop using the sharpener and contact BladeOrbit support. Do not sharpen with a loose abrasive disc, unstable roller or damaged magnetic surface. Clean and dry all components before storing them away from children.
